Before you price anything

Which fence rules apply to your lot?

Kingman has two rulebooks — the city's and Mohave County's — and the ZIP code doesn't tell you which one you're under. Answer two questions.

1. Where is the property?
2. Where does the fence go?

Nothing is submitted — this only changes which answer panel is shown.

City of Kingman · rear / side yard

6 ft solid · 8 ft masonry (multi-family)

Per Table 4-50.050.A of the Kingman Zoning Code, a solid fence or wall is capped at 6 feet at the side or rear. A masonry wall between a multi-family lot and an adjoining single-family lot can go to 8 feet. Most fences need a Minor Improvement Permit (§4-50.030), not a full building permit.

City of Kingman · front yard

3 ft solid · 4 ft chain-link or wrought iron

Per the Kingman Zoning Code (Table 4-50.050.A), a solid fence or wall in the front setback tops out at 3 feet. Chain-link with no slats, or decorative wrought iron, can go to 4 feet — but chain-link WITH slats counts as solid and is capped at 3 feet. Most fences need a Minor Improvement Permit (§4-50.030).

Mohave County · rear / side yard

6-foot minimum if it blocks the view

Under county zoning Section 27, a view-obscuring fence must be at least 6 feet unless the Board of Supervisors directs otherwise. Plastic sheeting, shade cloth, used garage doors, and non-remanufactured recycled sheet metal are barred as view-obscuring materials.

Mohave County · front yard

Up to 4 feet tall

Section 27 caps residential front-yard fencing at 4 feet along the front or sides of a front yard in standard residential districts. Going taller needs Traffic Safety Committee review; commercial or industrial perimeter fencing over $500 in construction cost needs a building permit.

Not sure which one you're in?

A Kingman ZIP isn't proof

In the city's own words: "A Kingman zip code does not necessarily mean you live within the City of Kingman." Golden Valley, Butler, Valle Vista, Chloride, and Dolan Springs are all outside city limits and fall under Mohave County.

  • Everywhere else: Mohave County Planning & Zoning, 928-757-0903

Either way: the only sure way to know where your property line is, is a survey by a registered surveyor. An existing fence, tree, or curb is not the line. (KGM-016) · Full rules & permits page →

Common questions

How tall can a fence be in Kingman?

Inside Kingman city limits, the Zoning Code caps a solid front-yard fence at 3 feet (4 feet for chain-link with no slats or decorative wrought iron) and a solid side/rear fence at 6 feet, as of the code in effect August 2026. Outside city limits — Golden Valley and the rest of unincorporated Mohave County — county Section 27 caps front-yard fencing at 4 feet and requires view-obscuring fencing to be at least 6 feet. (KGM-016, KGM-011)

Do I need a permit to build a fence in Kingman?

Most fences inside city limits need a Minor Improvement Permit under the Kingman Zoning Code, not a full building permit. In unincorporated Mohave County, commercial or industrial perimeter fencing over $500 in construction cost requires a building permit; residential fencing generally does not. Confirm with the jurisdiction before you build. (KGM-016, KGM-011)

How much does a fence cost in Kingman, AZ?

As of August 2026, a typical Kingman fence project runs roughly $2,244–$2,795 for about 150–159 linear feet (around $15–$19 per foot blended), though the material you choose swings that number a lot — installed chain link nationally runs $32–$71 per foot, wood privacy $25–$55 per foot, vinyl $45–$74 per foot, and wrought iron $50–$85 per foot. See the full cost guide for the per-material breakdown and sourcing.

What licence should a fence contractor in Arizona have?

Residential fencing falls under Arizona ROC classification R-14, C-14 or CR-14 (Fencing). Look the company up at azroc.my.site.com and check the classification, not just that a licence exists — a masonry-only CR-31 licence, for example, does not cover most fence work. (AZ-006, AZ-010)
