If you want privacy anyway
Most people asking about wind are asking because they want a solid fence and have heard solid fences blow over. They can be built to last here — the cost of doing it is paid in the ground, not in the panels. Things that genuinely help:
- Closer post spacing. More posts share the same load, so each carries less of it. It is the least glamorous upgrade on any quote and often the most effective.
- Deeper and wider footings. Diameter matters as well as depth — a wider footing resists the post rotating in the ground.
- Steel posts under a wood or vinyl fence. A common approach that keeps the appearance and moves the structural job to a material that does not rot at grade.
- An extra horizontal rail. Three rails instead of two on a 6-foot wood fence reduces how much each board can work loose independently.

A twice-a-year walk
Most wind failures announce themselves months in advance. Walk the fence line before and after the windiest part of the year and look for four things:
- Posts that move when you push on them at the top, or soil pulled away from a footing.
- Gates that have stopped closing squarely — usually the earliest warning that a post is going.
- Loose fasteners and lifted boards, especially on the windward side.
- Rot or checking at grade on wood posts, where soil, irrigation, and sun all meet.

After a windstorm: what to do in what order
A fence that has come down is not usually an emergency, but the first hour is when the evidence is still there and the decisions are cheapest.
- 1. Deal with the safety issues first. A pool that has lost its barrier, a dog that can now leave the yard, and loose panels that can still move in the wind are all more urgent than the fence itself. Arizona's pool barrier requirements do not pause for a storm.
